Hawkins Hardware is a family run business that has been in existence since 1953. Founded by Len Hawkins the business continues to thrive under the management of his son Andrew. The shop boasts over 10,000 square feet of space with around about 25,000 different lines stocked.
This must make the store about the largest independent retailer in the town. Hawkins is a main agent for Flogas selling bottled butane and propane gas in a variety of different sizes.
The store is also an official Hotpoint Centre stocking a wide variety of 'white goods' including fridges, freezers, dishwashers, washing machines and cookers. Prices are competitive and Hawkins offer free delivery and installation in the local area (to suitable connections).
They'll even take away your old machine and get rid of it for you if you want (not refrigeration goods - due to regulations).
In feel this store is almost a Department store - although Hawkins describe themselves as 'old fashioned Ironmongers with new ideas', this doesn't do the store full justice.
There is a vast range of tools and any specialist tools that aren't in stock can be readily obtained quickly. As you might expect, there are major brand names stocked like Black and Decker and Ryobi.
As well as a key cutting service and modern security systems including locks in every shape and size there's an extensive painting and decorating section featuring Crown Paints and Berger Paints.
There's a fine selection of china and glassware to choose from plus most of the small electrical goods that make modern life much more easy - like microwaves, toasters, coffee makers and vacuum cleaners.
Upstairs you'll find more cookers with a complete range of Addis Homewares and selections of brassware and fireside goods.
Certainly, our picture and text can't do the store full justice - why not go along and see for yourselves - we've not even mentioned the wheelbarrows, spades, forks and pickaxes etc. Whatever your needs in the garden or the home Hawkins will probably have it! The shop is open 8.00am till 5.00pm six days per week.
One last thing - did we also mention that they're blooming good Ironmongers - if you need that special flanged whatnot - try them!
